US Census - St Helena Birthplace [doc
file - 937 KB]
(contributed by Christine
Adams)
The 1860 census analysis vis a vis
St. Helena as a birthplace is meant to be a finding aid - not proof positive
of the subject's birthplace. That being said, however, there are
relatively few places named "St Helena" in world geography. The exception
to the rule, and greatest possibility for mis-information or confusion
is the St. Helena Island in South Carolina. The birthplace has been
copied exactly as the census taker wrote it. If it indicated South
Carolina in any way, that record was omitted. ALL "St Helena" entries from
the state of South Carolina were also omitted, estimating they were more
likely to pertain to the Island there. Researchers looking for the
off-Island destination of 19th century "Saints" should find the file
helpful as a research aid and finding tool, even understanding that there
could be a few stray entries pertaining to another "St Helena."
